Summer Reading Assignments
Summer is a wonderful time to foster the love of reading with your child. Suggested books by grade level can be found in the drop down menu above under summer reading.
Beginners and Prep I
We encourage you to spend time reading together this summer. Exposure to literature is one of the best things that you can do for your child. When you read, take some time to talk about the story–make predictions about what will happen next, have a conversation about a specific character and decisions they made in the story, or simply discuss whether you liked the book and why.
Prep II and First Grade
We suggest that you set a goal of reading five books this summer. Your child may read independently or, depending on your child’s reading level, you may read them together. You may even choose to partner read–you read one page and your child reads another. Please list the books you have read on the reading log included in the summer work folder and bring the list to your child’s teacher at the beginning of the school year.
Second Grade
Students should read a minimum of five books, but we have space for up to ten on the reading log if he or she would like to read more. Your child may choose to read independently or you may read together. Please have your child bring the list to school at the beginning of the school year.
Third Grade
Students entering third grade are required to read Stuart Goes to School by Sara Pennypacker and complete the writing activities accompanying the book in the summer work folder. In addition to Stuart Goes to School, please include at least four titles on the reading log. Please have your child bring the list to school at the beginning of the school year.
Fourth Grade
Students entering fourth grade are required to read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume and complete the writing activities accompanying the book in the summer work folder. In addition to Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, please include at least three titles on the reading log. We ask that each parent and child sign the log and bring it to the first day of school along with the competed writing assignment.
Upper School For our summer reading and writing program, all Upper School students are expected to complete the enclosed assignments in the summer work folder. Assignments are due the first day of school and will be reviewed as part of the English curriculum.
